Modern diesel engines with EGR valves are notorious by design for suffering from restricted intake piping and, oil filled intercoolers and carbon built up in the engine. This is largly due to the recirculated gases being put back into your air intake by the EGR valve. These gases carry with them oil vapour which overtime coats the internal air piping, collects in the intercooler and ends up creating hardened carbon deposits in the engine.

While in most places it is technically illegal to disable the EGR valve on your diesel engine for On-road use, you can signifcantly reduce the amount of oil vapour making its way into your air intake with an Oil Catch Can.
